Riley Herbst has been cleared to compete in Sunday’s XFINITY 500 at Martinsville Speedway, 23XI Racing co-owner Denny Hamlin confirmed on Sunday.

Herbst was involved in a major accident last weekend at Talladega Superspeedway, which saw his No. 35 Monster Energy Toyota Camry XSE slam the outside SAFER Barrier exiting the tri-oval, lose brakes, and slam the inside wall at full speed. The Las Vegas, Nevada-native was helped from his car, and later released from the infield care center with a cast on his left arm.

According to Hamlin, Herbst will attempt to run all 500 laps on Sunday.

“I think Riley [Herbst] is going to attempt to run,” Hamlin said in a media availability on Saturday. “I’ll let him talk about the medical side of things, but it’s really, I think, a pain tolerance thing for him, and I suspect he’ll try to get it done this weekend.”

Herbst has gotten behind the wheel of the No. 35 Toyota Camry XSE for Saturday’s NASCAR Cup Series practice at Martinsville, and after the session is complete, will likely have a better idea of what he needs in order to make it the full 500 laps, if that will be possible for him on Sunday.

Should Herbst need to exit the No. 35 Toyota Camry XSE at any point during this weekend, NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series driver Harrison Burton will be at the racetrack and on standby if needed.

Burton served as the fill-in for Herbst at Daytona International Speedway in September, when the 27-year-old driver was diagnosed with a concussion – after a hard wreck at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
