The NASCAR Cup Series, after three consecutive weeks of competing on mile-and-a-half racetracks, has returned to the flat one-mile oval of Phoenix Raceway, and there’s nobody happier about it than Team Penske and its drivers Ryan Blaney and Joey Logano.

After posting the quickest time in Saturday’s 50-minute practice session, Blaney catapulted his No. 12 Menards Ford Mustang Dark Horse to the top of the timesheets in qualifying, collecting his fourth pole at Phoenix Raceway and the 17th of his career at NASCAR’s top level.

This weekend, not only will the former NASCAR Cup Series champion be looking to collect his third consecutive victory at the one-mile short track in Avondale, Arizona, but he’ll also try to put himself back in championship contention – entering Sunday’s 312-lap contest fifth in standings, 85 points back of leader Kyle Larson.

Posting a time of 26.250 seconds (137.143mph), Blaney beat his Team Penske teammate, three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Joey Logano, by 32 one-thousandths of a second to collect the pole position. Logano will start the race on the outside of the front row.

After the front-row sweep for Team Penske, the remainder of the top-five was occupied by Joe Gibbs Racing, with championship contenders Chase Briscoe, Denny Hamlin, and Christopher Bell qualifying third, fourth, and fifth.

Tyler Reddick was sixth quickest, with Ty Gibbs in seventh, non-Chase drivers Michael McDowell and Josh Berry in eighth and ninth, and William Byron rounding out the top-10 – the highest qualifier of the four Hendrick Motorsports drivers.

Kyle Larson, who enters Phoenix with a 49-point advantage over Denny Hamlin, will start a disappointing 22nd.

Other Chase drivers starting outside the top-10 on Sunday include Daniel Suarez (14th), Austin Cindric (15th), Chase Elliott (16th), Chris Buescher (17th), Bubba Wallace (23rd), Ryan Preece (26th), and Carson Hocevar (38th).

All 37 drivers entered in Sunday’s Freeway Insurance 500 posted a lap in qualifying.

Sunday’s 312-lap contest from Phoenix will go green at 3:00 PM ET on USA Sports.
