William Byron and Bubba Wallace needed an outside chance to be a championship contender, but both drivers wrecked out in the NASCAR Cup Series race early at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Now, a miracle is needed for the No. 23 and No. 24 team to win the championship.
On lap 76, Alex Bowman was on the bottom of Wallace when Bowman’s No. 48 car snapped on the exit of the corner right into the path of Wallace.
After getting released from the infield care center, Bowman said, “I run down there a lot and been really tight on exit. As I touch the throttle, it snapped. It caught me off guard, and I overcorrected and just did a shit job.”
Wallace was clipped and spun down to the inside wall and hit the wall rear end first.
When asked what happened from his perspective, Wallace said, “No warning. I saw it in the last second – the 48 [of Alex Bowman] come up and clip us. No hard feelings; that is just racing.” I was starting to drop, and it gets into a tight spot. To get on pit road smooth, we wanted to stay in front of him.”
It took a few moments for Wallace to get out of his car, but he emerged under his own power.
Wallace said, “The first hit wiped our brakes out. The second hit got me good. But we are good. Still got nine fingers and nine toes, so we are fine.”
Byron was running behind Wallace and had nowhere to go after Bowman hit the outside wall.
Byron said, “It looks like the No. 48 [of Alex Bowman] just got loose and overcorrected it into the wall. I was running the top, and I lifted right away, but I couldn’t get low enough because he kind of came back off the wall.”
