Richmond Raceway continues to hold the well-deserved name of The Action Track, but, that action is unfortunately going to have to wait until Saturday (August 15), after the entire industry was bamboozled by Mother Nature on Friday.
The NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series Black’s Tire 250 at Richmond Raceway, the penultimate event of the regular season, has been postponed due to inclement weather, and instead will take place on Saturday, August 15 at [] ET, before the running of the NASCAR Cup Series event.
All of Friday’s on-track activity for the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series went off without a hitch – with both series getting their full practice and qualifying sessions getting in with no interruptions – but when it came time to drop the green flag, the area was in a lightning hold.
NASCAR did its proper due-diligence and waited for the 30-minute period required after the latest lightning strike within an eight-mile radius of the racetrack, but then, right as the drivers were climbing back in their trucks and the engines were about to be fired, another lightning strike came.
That only pushed the command back about 10 minutes. What pushed it back even further was a freak accident where the television compound had a generator fire, which forced the NASCAR Radio Network and FOX Sports to be off the air – both nationally (instead showing last year’s Truck Series event at Richmond) and in the media center.
Now, just because that wasn’t enough chaos for Richmond Raceway, after that problem had seemingly been solved, it began to rain. The rain started out light, got heavier, and eventually turned into a full-on thunderstorm, with monsoon-like conditions and consistent thunder and lightning.
There wasn’t zero action during the rain delay, though, as a young fan climbed up to the flag stand to the applause of the crowd waiting out the rain at Richmond Raceway. NASCAR, of course, rushed to the flag stand and reprimanded the young fan for being somewhere he shouldn’t be.
After reaching 10:00 PM ET, NASCAR elected to postpone the Black’s Tire 250 to Saturday at Noon ET Coverage will be on FOX Sports 2 and the NASCAR Racing Network, plus SiriusXM NASCAR Radio Channel 90.
