Now a two-time NASCAR Cup Series race-winner, could Ty Gibbs be heading to Australia once the NASCAR campaign wraps in November?

According to a report from Speedcafe on Tuesday, August 11, Gibbs, driver of the No. 54 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota Camry XSE in the NASCAR Cup Series, is said to be the target driver for a ‘wildcard’ entry in the Supercars finale at Adelaide.

Gibbs would be piloting a third Toyota GR Supra entry for Walkinshaw TWG Racing in the season-finale of the automaker’s first year competing in the Australian Supercars division. However, the report states that the only thing left to be done is a sign-off from the plan’s United States counterpart.

The Mooresville, North Carolina-native is the 2022 NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series champion and is among a new group of young drivers who have come up with great prowess on the road courses, partly to attempt to master what was such a large part of the Cup Series schedule, and now, with the addition of former Supercars driver Shane Van Gisbergen to the Cup Series, to try and dethrone SVG.

Walkinshaw TWG told Speedcafe: “With our international connections, both through our directors and now through the Toyota global family, we are always investigating wildcard opportunities. We believe in the strength of the team, especially with international star power, but have nothing confirmed or to announce currently.”

Team Penske NASCAR Cup Series driver Austin Cindric was involved in a wildcard program last Fall at Adelaide, while defending NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series champion Jesse Love also travelled to Australia to compete in the Super2 Series round.

Speedcafe also understands that talks for a Chevrolet wildcard entry in this season’s finale are also ongoing, with Team 18 able to field an additional entry. Connor Zilisch, a teammate to Van Gisbergen in the NASCAR Cup Series, is thought to be the target for a program should it come to fruition.
