Gavan Boschele is one of Toyota Racing USA’s hottest prospects, and after an impressive debut performance in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series on Friday, it’s quite easy to see why.
The 18-year-old driver linked up with TRICON Garage to pilot the No. 1 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro in the TSPORT 200 at Indianapolis Raceway Park, the first of four events he’ll run with the championship-winning organization this season, and brought home an eighth-place finish.
It’s the best finish for a driver making their debut in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series since February at Daytona, when Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. secured a top-five result for Niece Motorsports. For a driver not already full-time in the NASCAR Cup Series, though, it’s the best finish on debut since Brenden Queen finished fourth for TRICON at North Wilkesboro in 2024.
When the green flag dropped for Boschele’s 200-lap debut in the NASCAR Truck Series, the Mooresville, North Carolina-native already had 150 laps under his belt around Indianapolis Raceway Park, having run the ARCA Menards Series event just minutes before – where he finished fourth, his fifth top five in six races for Nitro Motorsports.
Having those extra laps on the 0.686-mile short track, something that only him and his teammate Kaden Honeycutt were able to achieve, certainly helped lessen the learning curve for Boschele and allowed him to begin methodically working his way through the pack from a 19th-place starting spot.
The end of Friday’s 200-lapper saw Boschele holding his own inside the top-10 against several regulars in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series, and threatening to advance further up the running order, which, with more laps, would have certainly been possible.
Overall, a solid debut for a driver who had never turned a lap in a NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series vehicle prior to practice on Friday afternoon.
“I thought we executed pretty well, you know, pit road was probably going to be my biggest struggle, and I honestly felt like I did a pretty good job,” Boschele said post-race. “Jerame [Donley] and all the TRICON guys brought me a super-fast race car, and they did a good job to keep me prepared. Solid, I think if I do it all over again, I’m even better, so they did a really good job getting me comfy, and yeah, just super proud of my guys, feels really good.”
“It was [a] huge [learning experience], you know, definitely having the ARCA race before that, getting lines and stuff like that definitely helped, but this Truck drives so much different, so, yeah, it was really fun. I like these things, so I’m excited for the three more I have left this year. Jerame, I have to say hats off to him, he did a really good job getting me comfortable, my spotter Nick [Payne], too.”
Boschele will return to TRICON Garage for at least three additional starts in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series this season, coming at New Hampshire, Kansas, and Martinsville. Even with an incredible run on Friday, though, the 18-year-old rising star wants more from himself, even on debut.
“A top 10 in my debut feels… I’m always holding myself to a standard, so I always want to win, but you know, it feels pretty good.”
