Paramount is reportedly moving forward with a sequel to the popular 1990s film, Days of Thunder, which stars Tom Cruise as race car driver Cole Trickle, more than 35 years after the film’s initial release on June 27, 1990.

The Hollywood Reporter, in a recent report, says that Cruise is set to reprise the role of Cole Trickle, while producing the movie alongside Jerry Bruckheimer, one of the producers of the original Days of Thunder film.

Jonathan Levine is poised to serve as the film’s director. Levine’s body of work includes All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (2006), The Wackness (2008), 50/50 (2011), Warm Bodies (2013), The Night Before (2015), Snatched (2017), and Mr. Irrelevant: The John Tuggle Story (2026). The Brown University graduate also served as Producer for the 2016 comedy Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates.

The details of the plotline for Days of Thunder 2 are still being kept under wraps; however, the script is being written by Will Staples, who has previously written video games such as Call of Duty 3: Modern Warfare and also co-wrote the Michael B. Jordan movie Without Remorse.

Days of Thunder starred Tom Cruise as Cole Trickle and also included starring roles for Robert Duvall as Harry Hogge and Nicole Kidman as Dr. Claire Lewicki. Randy Quaid, Michael Rooker, and Cary Elwes also had prominent roles in the feature film.

Duvall passed away in February 2026 at the age of 95.

The idea of a Days of Thunder sequel has been in the ether for quite some time. In November 2024, it was reported that Cruise was in talks to star in and produce the sequel.

Filming for the sequel is expected to begin in early 2027. No potential release date has been made public.
