Zane Smith doesn’t like Carson Hocevar, and he’ll tell you that with his entire chest.
The Front Row Motorsports driver was involved in an incident with Hocevar in last Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series event at Chicagoland Speedway, making contact heading into the corner and sending them both into the wall – an incident that many (NASCAR excluded) thought was intentional on the part of Smith.
Smith and Hocevar will be among the contingent of drivers paying a visit to the NASCAR Hauler this weekend at EchoPark Speedway in Hampton, Georgia, as the sanctioning body tries to ensure these tussles don’t escalate even further in the coming weeks.
In a Thursday episode of Racin’ With The Boys, hosted by Taylor Lewan and Will Compton, the Huntington Beach, California-native didn’t hold back when asked by Lewan for one word that describes Hocevar, to which Smith said “bum-fuck”.
Riley Herbst, who was on the podcast alongside Smith, was less passionate about any potential disdain towards the driver of the No. 77 Spire Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro and used the word “nuisance”.
Smith wasn’t letting Hocevar off the hook easily, though, and continued talking about the 23-year-old driver, with whom he’s had multiple run-ins over the last couple of years racing across the NASCAR Cup Series and NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series, saying that his fans are an equally bothersome part of the rising star, calling them “the worst” and saying that the industry would agree – comparing them to a South Park character of an internet troll.
…and that’s not even the half of it. Smith, the 2023 NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series champion, went on to explain that while Hocevar is reckless on the racetrack, causing a lot of different incidents with different drivers, he also has a persona that many in the garage, including the driver of the No. 38, find to be two-faced.
“You’ll have run-ins with certain guys, and you’ll have that throughout your career with certain people,” Smith said. “He’ll try to talk to you after saying, ‘Oh, I don’t talk to anybody out there.’ But he’s full of shit. He tries to be your buddy and then will go and screw you. Like, just don’t talk to me in the first place because, one, I don’t like you, and we’re gonna eventually have a run-in together, so let’s just not talk in the first place.”
That notion of Hocevar being two-faced comes partly with the on-track action that the No. 77 always find himself in the middle of, but at the same time, also comes with his online persona, and while that’s allowed the Portage, Michigan-native to grow his fanbase, it’s also seemingly perturbed many who face him on the racetrack every weekend.
“Honestly, my approach with Carson – because he’s fast – me and him had a run-in at Iowa, and we’ve raced hard and whatnot,” Smith added. “And there’s a difference, certain guys will race you hard, but he’ll just put us both in a bad spot to where it’s costing us lap time and neither of us are benefitting from it. That part gets frustrating. But I remember he made a mistake – I don’t know if he made a mistake – but he wrecked us and then spends the rest of the race waving at me like playing nice guy of, ‘So sorry! I’m so sorry!’ Then he goes on social media and posts like ‘Admit One’ like ‘I don’t give a fuck.’”
“If you’re going to be the guy hiding behind social media, like I don’t know, that’s a coward in my opinion. Like, act that way in person, say that to my face. Like, alright I’m gonna be the same way, but don’t be one way in person and then hide behind your phone.”
This disdain for Hocevar isn’t new information… with Smith providing similar soundbites one year ago after a run-in between the two drivers at Iowa Speedway… and it doesn’t appear, after what happened last weekend at Chicagoland, that this rivalry is going to cool anytime soon.
Hocevar sits ninth in NASCAR Cup Series point standings with a victory at Talladega, while Zane Smith sits outside the top-20, in 23rd, with multiple top-five results, most recently at Naval Base Coronado on Father’s Day Weekend.
NASCAR heads to EchoPark Speedway this weekend for the fourth of six superspeedway events this season, a place where, hopefully, neither Smith or Hocevar will look to take matters into their own hands on the racetrack, as NASCAR explained earlier this week, that could result in a penalty.
