The NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series is back on a normal road course, and Shane Van Gisbergen is back in the field, so as I’m sure you can imagine… the Auckland, New Zealand-native has won the pole for Saturday’s Pit Boss / FoodMaxx 250 at Sonoma Raceway.
Piloting the No. 9 SuperFile Chevrolet Camaro, a fifth entry for JR Motorsports, Van Gisbergen laid down a lap time of 75.029 seconds (95.483mph) to secure the pole, his sixth in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and 12th across NASCAR’s National Series.
In two prior NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series starts at Sonoma Raceway, Van Gisbergen has captured the pole both times, and in those races, gone on to finish either first or second-place. The 1.99-mile road course was the site of his first pole in NASCAR National Series competition.
Brent Crews, the 18-year-old rookie driver from Joe Gibbs Racing, will start Saturday’s event from the outside of the front row, laying down a lap time just two tenths of a second slower than Van Gisbergen during Friday’s qualifying.
Taylor Gray will start the race in the third position, while Viking Motorsports teammates Anthony Alfredo and Parker Retzlaff put on ANOTHER strong performance for the organization, qualifying an impressive fourth and fifth.
Corey Day, who paced Friday’s NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series practice session, will roll from sixth on Saturday, with Jesse Love, Justin Allgaier, Sam Mayer, and Austin Hill rounding out the top-10.
Notables starting outside the top-10 include Sheldon Creed (11th), William Sawalich (12th), Sammy Smith (13th), Brandon Jones (14th), Ross Chastain (15th), and Rajah Caruth (21st).
Connor Zilisch, the defending NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series race-winner at Sonoma Raceway, will start from 29th, after dealing with a flat tire in qualifying, which NASCAR would not allow them to change. The driver of the No. 1 Chevrolet will likely have to start at the rear of the field on Saturday for changing a tire.
Austin Green, typically a strong force on the road courses in the NASCAR O’Reilly Auto Parts Series, will roll from 37th, in a backup car, after a terrible accident in Friday’s practice where the No. 87 Chevrolet lost brakes heading into Turn 11, smashing into the tire barriers and breaking the wall in the hairpin.
The Pit Boss / FoodMaxx 250 at Sonoma Raceway will take place on Saturday, June 27, at 5:30 PM ET on The CW.
