Axalta, in Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series event at Phoenix, will serve as the primary sponsor of the No. 24 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet for the final time (at least in name). And, in doing so, will have a paint scheme IDENTICAL to their first appearance in NASCAR.
With help from Jeff Gordon and William Byron, both the current (Byron) and former (Gordon) driver of the No. 24 Axalta Chevrolet, Hendrick Motorsports unveiled the paint scheme that will hit the racetrack this weekend, as part of a special send-off for the Axalta brand.
Byron, a 16-time NASCAR Cup Series race-winner, will run a red, yellow, and black No. 24 with the iconic Axalta Flames paint scheme on it, matching the one that Jeff Gordon ran when the brand debuted on the entry in 2013.
“I just always felt like the right fade of flames on the black base was always just a cool paint scheme,” said four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jeff Gordon. “Excited to see William drive the paint scheme for the last time.”
“Axalta is one of the most iconic sponsors in our sport,” said William Byron. “A lot of fans really resonate with it, when you talk to fans and you see the gear around the track.”
“I love the flames, I love the black, probably going to have enough souvenirs for the fans, enough diecasts, because this is going to be red hot,” said Rick Hendrick, owner of Hendrick Motorsports.
While the name Axalta won’t be on a Hendrick Motorsports entry past this weekend’s event at Phoenix, the company is still committed to sponsoring the organization and will reveal its paint scheme (with a new brand name) at a later date.
“So much great history between these two companies, we’re looking forward to representing them well and getting a little confetti on that car,” said Jeff Andrews, General Manager of Hendrick Motorsports.
Axalta and AkzoNobel announced in November of 2025 an all-stock merger of equals, combining the two companies and the entirety of their portfolio and assets under a brand-new company, with a name and a NYSE ticker symbol that have yet to be announced.
That new brand will serve as a primary sponsor for Byron moving forward.
