Richard Childress Racing (RCR) announced on Friday that the organization will be suspending its usage of the No. 8 in its NASCAR Cup Series program, following the sudden and unexpected passing of two-time champion Kyle Busch.
The organization will be pivoting its second full-time entry to run the No. 33 at Charlotte Motor Speedway and beyond. No word on who will drive the entry beyond Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600, where Austin Hill will drive the Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen-sponsored entry.

In a statement released by the team, Richard Childress Racing says that the No. 8 will be reserved and ready for Brexton Busch, Kyle’s 11-year-old son, when (and if) he is ready to go NASCAR racing.
Richard Childress Racing has elected to suspend use of the No. 8 and will run the No. 33 at Charlotte Motor Speedway and beyond. Kyle Busch was instrumental in the design of RCR’s stylized No. 8 and it has become synonymous with Kyle and an important symbol for his fans and the NASCAR industry. No one can carry it forward to the level that he did. The No. 8 is reserved and ready for Brexton Busch when he is ready to go NASCAR racing.
Busch first joined Richard Childress Racing in 2023, taking over the No. 8 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 from Tyler Reddick. However, upon the 63-time NASCAR Cup Series winner’s arrival at the organization, Busch and RCR designed a brand-new number for the Las Vegas, Nevada-native to use.
That stylized number went to Victory Lane three times in the NASCAR Cup Series in 2023, winning at the now-closed Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, at Talladega Superspeedway, and World Wide Technology Raceway.
While his time behind the wheel of the No. 8 was short, Busch will always be synonymous with that stylized number.
